Stampin' Up! Animal Outing

Take a Walk on The Wild Side

Have you seen this suite in the new Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog?  It's adorable.  At first glance, this might just be a set for children's cards, but I don't think so.  Who wouldn't love to get a card with a rhino, kangaroo or giraffe as the featured character?  This set would be great for scrapbooking a visit to the zoo, creating birthday cards or creating a zoo themed birthday party.  My niece recently had a baby and I am going to make her a new baby card with this set.

I have mentioned in the past that sometimes Stampin' Up! demonstrators share cards with each other.  My friend Sheryl Koenigsknecht actually created this card and shared it with me.  She also taught me an awesome tip that I'm going to share with you.  Take a look at the Animal Expedition Designer Series Paper that coordinates with the Animal Outing Bundle.

Did you notice that some of the animals face the left and some of them face the right?  The tip that Sheryl shared with me is going to allow us to cut both of those animals from one framelit.  That, by the way, only cuts rhinos that face the left.  This tip is for cutting the animal that would normally cut backwards when using the framelit.    Cut out a rough shape around the animal that you are wanting to cut out with the framelit.  Be sure to include enough  paper at the bottom as this will be crucial to lining the framelit up.  Place the framelit, with the cutting side up, onto the designer paper.  Once you have the framelit lined up, carefully cut the paper along the bottom of the framelit just enough to be able to line it back up once you flip it over.  I cut a little along the edge as well just to make sure I would line it up correctly.

You can see here that the framelit lines up properly to cut the image.  If the rhino was facing the other way, the framelit would not cut properly

Turn the framelit upside down.  See the cutting edge is facing upwards?  Use the framelit as a guide to cut the bottom edge as a guideline.  I also cut up the right edge slightly

See how the cutting edge of the framelit is facing up in the second image?  This is only to line it up and cut a line in the paper so that you have a guideline to cut it with the framelit once you flip it over. DO NOT run this through the big shot this way or your framelit will stick to the cutting plate.

The bottom edge is lined up.  See how I cut the left edge just to make sure I was lining up everywhere?

Once you have a guideline cut, flip the designer paper over and line up the framelit.  The cutting edge should now be facing down.  Run this through your Big Shot and tada!!!! you now have a rhino that faces left and right!! Genius, right?  This tip will make using this, and LOTS of other papers and framelits, so much easier.  Try it out on some of your other papers.

Here's what we used to create the card:

  • Animal Expedition Designer Series Paper (item #146902)
  • Animal Outing Bundle (item #148324)
  • Layered leaves embossing folder (item #143704)
  • whisper white cardstock (item #100730)
  • Mossy Meadow cardstock (item #133676)
  • Berry Burst cardstock (item #144243)
  • Stitched Framelits (item #145372)

Here's how we created the card:

  • Cut Berry Burst Cardstock to 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Score at 4 1/4" and burnish with a bone folder.
  • Cut Berry Burst Cardstock to 4" x 5 1/4" and run through the Big Shot using the Layered Leaves embossing folder.  Attach this piece to the front of your card base
  • Cut a piece of Animal Expedition Designer Paper to 1 1/2" x 5 1/4".  Cut a banner on the right end. Attach to the front of the card as shown.
  • Cut a 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" square from Mossy Meadow cardstock
  • Cut a coordinating square using whisper white cardstock and the square stitched framelit
  • Cut the animal of your choice from the designer series paper.
  • Cut leaves using mossy meadow cardstock and the leaf framelit
  • Attach the zoo animal and leaves as shown.  Attach the white square to the top of the mossy meadow square.
Now all you need to do is add a sentiment inside, or your could stamp one underneath the rhino if you choose.  Put it into an envelope and mail it off!!!

I hope that you enjoyed today's tip from my friend, Sheryl.   Wasn't it a great one?
